first_imgA newly organized Civil Society Organization (CSO) referred to as the “Rural Dwellers Consciousness Movement of Liberia, (RDCML)” has differed with the Senate on legislation barring officials of the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) from contesting future elections in the country. In a statement, RDCML says its attention has been drawn to the legislation adopted by the Senate, barring functionaries of the CBL entity from any electoral process in the country. Through a statement issued yesterday, and signed by its secretary-general, AdolphusGbagba, the Movement believes that the legislation is not only “ill-fated and infamous, but holds that said legislation is also selfishly and politically motivated by a hidden external hand.”The movement, according to the statement, believes that during this critical period in our national existence where a majority of the citizens must wallow to fend for themselves, “it is unthinkable and far-fetched for elected lawmakers to propagate legislations that are diabolical and anti-the people.”“It is evident that the move by the CBL to get the masses, especially rural inhabitants, out of the poverty trap is unprecedented: It helps to provide livelihood for the vast majority of our citizens in a poverty-stricken post-conflict. It must therefore be appreciated by all well-meaning citizens.” According to the group, the lawmakers want to keep the struggling masses of a war-ravaged country in abject poverty, starvation, and destitution. This is   unacceptable. No time in the history of Liberia have benefits such as the CBL Loans Scheme, and other initiatives representing tax-payers’ money, has anything ever triggered down to the down-trodden until recently when the CBL made a robust intervention through its governor, Dr. Joseph Mills Jones, with inspiration and support from the President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Moreover, the movement noted that the action by the lawmakers has further exposed them to an absolute higher level of “insensitivity to the interest, wishes and aspiration of the Liberian people.”Accordingly, the movement representing the interest of, wishes and aspirations of thousands of rural dwellers, wish to caution the Senate of the movement’s ability and capacity to rally the support of its membership across the country to organize popular citizens’ protest against members of that august body to step away from yet another mistake— again, of their own making.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img
