56th Field Regiment puts skills to test

Reservists with the 56th Field Regiment were able to put their skills to the test during a recent week-long exercise that took them to Petawawa, Meaford and the Collingwood Airport.Close to 70 reservists from the regiment, which includes Brantford, Simcoe and St. Catharines, participated in Exercise Stalwart Guardian. The exercise is the final summer training program and brought together about 1,000 soldiers from across Ontario.“It was a great exercise for our regiment,” said Lt. Col. Lawrence Hatfield, commanding officer of the 56th. “They were given a number of challenging tasks throughout the week and performed admirably.“I’m proud of their efforts and of their commitment.”The exercise gave the soldiers an opportunity to move, set up and fire howitzer guns, as well as participate in a direct fire drill, said Hatfield.“It’s one thing to try and hit a target when you’re not under attack,” he said. “It’s something different altogether when you have to engage in some direct fire because the enemy is coming towards you and, at the same time, fire at unseen targets.”As part of the exercise, reservists with the 56th Field were transported to the Collingwood Airport to participate in a drill, Hatfield said.On Sept. 28, the regiment, in partnership with the City of Brantford, is holding Valour Day to honour Brantford’s wartime sacrifice and service.Valour Day includes an inspection of the regiment at Victoria Square followed by a regimental march on Dalhousie Street. At 11 a.m., the Jubilee Terrace Howitzer, a First World War war trophy awarded to Brantford, will return to its home beside the Brantford Armouries for a dedication ceremony. The howitzer has been refurbished after years of deterioration.A public reception will be held following the dedication ceremony. As well, there will be a army reserve recruiting open house. All events are open to the public.Vball@postmedia.comtwitter.com/EXPVBal read more

UN mission chief in DR of Congo meets with top Ugandan officials

During a visit yesterday to Uganda’s capital Kampala, William Lacy Swing, head of the UN Organization Mission in the DRC (MONUC) met with Vice-President Gilbert Bukenya and updated the Ugandan Government on recent developments in the DRC peace process. He also confirmed that the transitional government effectively “took off,” saying progress had been noted and that a meeting of armed groups operating in Ituri is scheduled for next Thursday in the Congolese capital of Kinshasa.Mr. Swing also announced that MONUC troops would be ready to take over from the multinational force due to withdraw from Bunia on 1 September. He thanked Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni for the facilities availed to the mission’s logistic base in Entebbe in the framework of its operations in Ituri. He also pointed out that his visit in Uganda coincided with the signing of the State of Forces Agreement between Uganda and MONUC, which officially authorizes the opening of a MONUC office in Kampala. read more

Ohio State running backs battle for playing time

Redshirt-senior running back Jordan Hall (2) uses the referee as a blocker during a game against Florida A&M Sept. 21 at Ohio Stadium. OSU won, 76-0.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorThe Ohio State football team (4-0) faces a considerable issue at the running back position this season: It has too many of them. With the return of senior Carlos Hyde from a three-game suspension, OSU now has eight active running backs on its roster. Among those including redshirt-senior H-back Jordan Hall one of seven whom participated in the Buckeyes’ 76-0 win over Florida A&M.Hyde, Hall, redshirt-junior Rod Smith, redshirt-freshman Warren Ball, freshmen Ezekiel Elliott and Devonte Butler all recorded at least three rushes. Freshman Dontre Wilson also played, but lined up as a receiver, tallying three catches for 12 yards. The only running back on the team that did not play was sophomore Bri’onte Dunn, who has yet to play this season and is likely to be redshirted.Elliott was the leading rusher on the day, gaining 162 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. It was the first significant playing time for the freshman, who only had seven total carries in the first three games. The St. Louis native said his big take away from Saturday was an opportunity to get onto the field during a game.“I’ve gotten a little bit from earlier this season, but just a little more game experience,” Elliott said. “Just getting out there and running the ball.”Despite the big performance from Elliott in the second half, coach Urban Meyer said he is not included in the top tier of running backs for the Buckeyes.“I think you have three that are above the others right now. You have Jordan Hall, Rod Smith and Carlos Hyde (who) are the top three backs,” Meyer said. “I think Warren Ball ran hard and I think Ezekiel Elliott’s got an incredible future here. I wanted to reward him a little bit; he’s involved in special teams now.”Even though a lot of running backs received playing time against the Rattlers Saturday, Elliott said it is a constant battle to earn carries at OSU.“It’s hard to get a spot and even hold the spot,” Elliott said. “The guy in front of you is great and the guy behind you is great so every day we out and compete and go hard.”Hall, the team leader in rushing yards with 422 on the season, saw his workload decreased with the return of Hyde, only carrying the ball four times against Florida A&M.“It’s tough, (there is) only one football,” Hall said. “When you come to Ohio State… there’s competition everywhere, so a lot of backs in the backfield, that makes us go hard in practice every day and I think that’s helped us in a way.”Meyer said the return of Hyde changes things in the Buckeye backfield, with both Hyde and Hall offering different skill sets to the team.“Jordan Hall gives you flexibility, too, I’m evaluating what to do with him, because I know he’s a heck of a tailback as well,” Meyer said.Meyer said he thought Hall should have seen more of the field with how he has played so far this season, but said that in a blowout it is hard for the starters to play a lot.“Jordan Hall deserved more carries than he got, but you just can’t do that. I’ve been on the other end of those, so I try to do the best we could, just run the ball every snap and let guys earn an opportunity to get on the field,” Meyer said. “Thing is, if you get depth on your field, you tell Ezekiel Elliott not to run hard, he’ll look at you like, ‘I’m running hard, because I have to get more carries.’”Hyde marked his return from suspension with a five-carry, 41-yard performance and a one-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter.Redshirt-senior quarterback Kenny Guiton said Hyde’s return helped boost the team’s energy and motivated them to keep playing hard.“It was nice,” Guiton said. “The standing ovation they gave him, that made me get some juice in my body and just some tingling went through my body and I told him, ‘Let’s go man, you got to go get this first (down) now.’”For the younger guys, having Hyde back helped with their nerves as they received more playing time than normal, with Elliott calling him a “great leader.”One of Hyde’s blockers, junior tight end Jeff Heuerman, said it was nice to have Hyde back because of his leadership and influence on the field.“Seeing him back out there was good. That’s definitely a player that carries a big load with us, and having him back was good,” Heuerman said.Hall said he enjoyed having Hyde back because it was a new experience for players who “are like brothers.”“It was fun because me and Carlos, we came in the same time but we never really got to play with each other at the same time,” Hall said. “So we’re excited about that and we got a lot of good backs, it’s going to be tough.”The running backs will have their next opportunity to separate themselves from the rest when the Buckeyes host No. 23 Wisconsin (3-1) Saturday at 8:00 p.m. read more

Tom Brady Will Be Bad Eventually

The other graybeards had a rapid declineWarren Moon, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning had great seasons between the ages 39-41 after which their stats fell It’s Tom Brady’s 40th birthday, and the New England Patriots quarterback has without a doubt earned himself a heaping bowl of avocado ice cream. Brady has been one of the greatest quarterbacks ever and is playing at an age when few football players are still putting on pads, let alone producing at an elite level.Brady is coming off his second-best statistical season ever1Brady posted his second-best career single-season marks in passer rating, adjusted net yards per attempt and ESPN’s Total Quarterback Rating in 2016 (his best for all three came in 2007). and arguably his greatest on-field achievement. Brady finished the 2016 regular season among the top three in nearly every major quarterback rate stat: touchdown rate, interception rate, yards per attempt, passer rating, ESPN’s Total Quarterback Rating and adjusted net yards per attempt. He finished the playoffs with the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history. It may appear that Brady is football’s Benjamin Button — a QB magically getting younger as he gets older. But it’s Brady’s commitment to hard work that’s the most likely source of his longevity. The offseason has been filled with stories about Brady’s anti-aging regimen, with everyone from Sports Illustrated’s Greg Bishop to All-Pro teammate Rob Gronkowski trying Brady’s self-care regimen. Brady even has a forthcoming book on how to replicate his age-defying performance. But despite Brady’s unwavering intent to demolish both the AFC East and time, it’s reasonable to ask how much longer he can keep this up.Brady’s 2016 season didn’t just stand out from the rest of the NFL — it towered over his own recent campaigns. Compared with his other recent seasons, 2016 almost looks like an aberration:Before the start of the 2015 season, Brady seemed to be on the decline; his rate stats in 2013 and 2014 were the worst since he first achieved All-Pro status in 2007. “Worst” is relative: Over this stretch, he was good enough to earn four Pro Bowl nods, four division titles and a Super Bowl win.Brady’s numbers improved in 2015 and then skyrocketed in 2016 — but his overall 2015 numbers don’t tell the complete story. In that season, his production started off significantly better than the previous two seasons, but he wasn’t able to sustain it:The drop-off in his level of play over the last month of 2015 was unmistakable, and it carried into the playoffs. His two-interception, four-sack, 56.4-rated passing performance in the AFC championship game was one of the worst playoff outings of his career.2Brady’s 56.4 passer rating is the second-lowest he’s ever posted in 34 playoff appearances; his two interceptions and four sacks that day are both tied for fourth-most.Unlike in 2015, Brady may have looked sharp late in the 2016 postseason because he had fewer games on the odometer — and not by his choosing. His Deflategate-related suspension for the first four games of the 2016 season not only served as a rallying cry for the entire Patriots organization, but also spared his body and arm from a month of bumps, bruises and repetitions. This season, Brady will have no such early-season sabbatical. He’ll be facing players who were born while he was in college at the University of Michigan. Thriving at his age in the NFL is certainly rare — but it’s not unprecedented. Warren Moon, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning all had a dominant season at or near age 40. But all three experienced a sudden decline in performance, as if a switch had been flipped on their ability: YEARAGEANY/APASSER RATINGRECORDANY/APASSER RATING LAST HURRAH SEASONREST OF CAREER New England seems intent on helping Brady replicate his 2016 season. This offseason, the team traded for speedy wideout Brandin Cooks to bolster the Brady arsenal. Patriots owner Robert Kraft compared the impact of this spring’s trade for Cooks to the team’s acquistion of Randy Moss in 2007. That deal sparked the greatest statistical season of Brady’s career. Some experts are projecting the Patriots to go undefeated, as they did after Moss arrived. There are a lot of reasons to believe Brady will stay excellent, from his self-care regimen to the talent around him to perhaps the best head coach in NFL history. But Favre and Manning were both playing their best football immediately before playing their worst.Brady picking up at age 40 where he left off at age 39? That would be unprecedented. Panasonic plans to cut 17000 jobs

first_imgOnly one day after hearing the news that Nokia is cutting 4,000 jobs and outsourcing another 3,000, we have news of another big tech company gearing up to restructure its business model and layoff employees, although this time, it’s not 4,000, it’s a much larger number.Panasonic, the biggest Japanese manufacturer of consumer electronics, and the world’s largest maker of plasma TVs, announced on Thursday that it will be cutting 17,000 jobs over the next two years. The company is gearing up for a major reorganization that will help it compete better with competitors in South Korea and China.Panasonic had already cut its number of employees from 385,000 to 367,000 in March 2010, but it’s now losing another 4.6 percent of employees. Panasonic’s chief executive, Fumio Ohtsubo, said in a statement that the reorganization will cost about $2 billion. But, he said the restructuring is expected to contribute about $735.6 million to Panasonic’s operating profit. He anticipates the profits to come mostly from increased sales of solar cells, LED lighting, lithium-ion batteries, and air-conditioning products. As we saw with Nokia’s partnership with Microsoft, whenever two companies join, there are surely layoffs to come. In the case of Panasonic, it acquired two companies this year, Panasonic Electric Works, and Sanyo Electric. These acquisitions most definitely have something to do with with the job cuts, as the company plans to condense any redundancies.Though it’s the world’s top maker of plasma TV displays, the more popular LCD display TV market is lead by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, both based in South Korea, and Japan’s Sony.Based in Osaka, Japan, the company is already dealing with a failing demand domestically due to the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit in March. Panasonic announced its earnings Thursday with a net loss of $498 million in the three months through March, but the company declined to share the fiscal year earnings due to the effects of the earthquake.Read more at Panasonic, via New York Timeslast_img read more

New Secretarial Order Promises Boom In Mining

first_imgWe need to improve all aspects of the supply chain – from geologic surveying to permitting reform – so that our nation produces more of the minerals that are fundamental to energy, health care, manufacturing, and other technologies. The Secretarial Order directs the U.S. Geological Survey to conduct a comprehensive geological survey of critical minerals and then make the data publically available. Story as aired:Audio PlayerDorene-on-new-secretarial-order-promises-boom-in-mining.mp3VmDorene-on-new-secretarial-order-promises-boom-in-mining.mp300:00RPd Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke  signed a new Secretarial Order focusing efforts to curb the nation’s growing dependence on foreign sources of minerals. The industry made $111 million in payments to Alaska Native corporations last year, in addition to $81 million in state government-related revenues through rents, royalties, fees, and taxes and $23 million in local government revenue through property taxes and payments in lieu of taxes. The order, in concert with efforts to streamline permitting, will potentially open up access to mineral extraction in Alaska. The industry provides mostly year-round employment for residents of over 50 communities, half of which are found in rural Alaska where few other jobs are available. The USGS previously filed Professional Paper 1802 – which analysed 23 minerals determined critical to national and economic security. Last year, 13,000 mining jobs paid workers $675 million in payroll, with an estimated  average annual wage of $108,000, over twice the state average for all sectors of the economy.last_img read more
