Opposition to Buju’s T&T concert comes amid ruling on gay sex

first_imgOn the heels of the historic ruling that gave the ok to gay sex in Trinidad & Tobago, LGBT activists says they will now turn their attention to protesting the 2019 performance of reggae star Buju Banton there. The jailed singer, who is set to be released in December this year, has been slated to give his first performance in T&T in April of 2019. However, on social media and locally, some LGBT activists are saying the community in T&T is strongly objecting to the planned concert because of who the artist is and what he thinks he represents. “There is no place for hate in Trinidad and no place for hatred in music. So, I was somewhat disturbed by the announcement that Buju Banton will perform here next year, after his release from prison,” Joshua Surtees wrote in the Trinidad Newsday. “Banton makes murder music. His lyrics literally encourage the murder of gay people. ‘Boom bye bye in a batty boy head,’ go the lyrics to his most famous hate song. There’s no place for that here.”The comments come following the April 12, 2018 ruling by Justice Devindra Rampersad that colonial-era laws criminalizing consensual sexual activity between same-sex adults were unconstitutional.LGBTQ activist Jason Jones had filed a lawsuit against the government of the Caribbean nation in February 2017, hoping to nullify sections 13 and 16 of the country’s Sexual Offences Act, which covered same-sex acts. Jones argued that the laws, although rarely enforced, violated his right to privacy and freedom of expression, The Guardian reported.  He celebrated over Twitter, writing, “VICTORY!”  last Thursday afternoon.( read more

Jamaica moving to amend gun court act

first_imgThe Jamaica government has introduced legislation aimed at having non-capital murder offences involving firearms heard by a judge without a jury.Seeking amendment of Gun Court ActJustice Minister Delroy Chuck has tabled the amendment to the Gun Court Act that indicates where “a decision has been taken to amend the Gun Court Act to provide for non-capital murder offences committed with a firearm to be tried in the Circuit Court Division of the Gun Court by a judge sitting without a jury”.It also noted that the Bill not only seeks to give effect to that decision, but also provides for consequential amendments to the Jury Act.Chuck said it makes sense to allow a judge alone to try all gun crimes in relation to non-capital murder “because all other gun offences are tried by a judge alone.“We see no reason why a judge alone cannot try the cases instead of a judge and seven jurors,” he added.Last year, Attorney General Marlene Malahoo Forte, during debate on the Criminal Justice (Administration) (Amendment) Act and the Indictments (Amendment) Act, told legislators that the present legislation provides for most firearm offences to be tried by a judge alone, but there is a glaring exception in relation to the offence of murder committed with a firearm.“In such a situation, the current law provides that trial is with jury. It is therefore being proposed that a firearm offence (in the non-capital category)… will be tried by a judge alone,” she said.Currently, capital murder cases which involve a gun must be tried with 12 jurors, while non-capital murder cases can be tried with seven jurors.last_img read more

Haitian Police Issue Warrants Against Opposition Politicians

first_imgPORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – Police have issued warrants for the arrest of opposition politicians and activists after an attempt had been made to burn down a company owned by President Jovenel Moise earlier this week.Government Commissioner, Jean Volney Bélamin, confirmed that 18 warrants were issued against political leaders and opposition activists in Port-de-Paix, on the country’s Atlantic coast, after they had tried to burn down JOMAR Auto parts, a company owned by Moïse on Tuesday.Moise has been under pressure from opposition parties who have been calling for his immediate removal from office amid allegations of corruption and on Tuesday one police officer was injured after the demonstrators threw stones and shot at police officers trying to prevent them from burning down the building.Earlier this week, the interfaith group, Religions for Peace Haiti, said it would no longer seek to mediate in efforts to establish a government of national unity in the French-speaking Caribbean Community after the opposition said it would not participate in the talks.Moïse, had in a Twitter message, wrote that he had requested the inter-faith group to act as a facilitator to ensure efforts at a government of national unity receive the support of the other stakeholders.“I requested the good offices of Religions for Peace to facilitate discussions with different sectors leading to a political agreement on the crisis. It has accepted. The Nation is happy to be able to count on its daughters and sons,” he wrote on his Twitter account.Meanwhile, Haiti has started a new fiscal year without ratifying the necessary legislation regarding the preparation and execution of the budget.Political observers say that since no draft budget law has been ratified, the authorities are using the 2017-18 national budget that had already been renewed last financial year.“The budget 2017-2018 was about 145 billion gourdes (One Gourde=US$0.01 cents). When it is renewed, it is the nominal value which is renewed, not the real value which is eaten by the inflation which reduces the renewed budget of the amount of the annual inflation not to mention the effects of the 30 per cent depreciation of the Gourdes value on the purchase of certain goods and services by the government,” said economist, Economy Germain.Another economist, Etzer Emile, believes that with or without a ratified budget, the situation is the same explaining that in all cases “budgetary choices are not at the service of growth and development Economist Kesner Pharel said the situation is the result of the dysfunction of the State and that it is a bad start for this new fiscal year which “strengthens the uncertainty in the economy and should jeopardize the prospects for economic growth for 2020”.He said that over the last five years, Haiti has failed to reach the two percent of gross domestic growth (GDP) threshold needed to create jobs and reduce poverty.last_img read more

Since opening its market, Betfair has reported 88% of volume traded on its Exchange favouring a ‘Conservative overall majority’ victory come 8 June. The Betfair Exchange has little hope for the Labour Party, who are currently backed at a record 18/1 to ‘win the most seats’.Betfair Spokesperson, Naomi Totten commented on the market: “The Conservatives were already odds-on to win most seats prior to Theresa May’s announcement and are now trading with a 93% chance of doing so. A Tory majority win had also been trading at 4/5 early Tuesday morning, implying a 57% chance, until they were backed into a low of 1/8 after the election was called, giving the blue party an implied 89% likelihood of winning an overall majority.“Despite the Liberal Democrats still being around a 50/1 shot, a quarter of all bets placed on the Most Seats markets have been on Tim Farron’s party, with punters perhaps expecting their position as the only anti-Brexit party to pay off in some fashion.”last_img read more
