first_img4. Christmas shopping…Sumner County merchants there are still spots available for the “30 days of Christmas” feature. Last week, I was out selling this promotion and stopped in at Wellington’s Hometown Rental. The business is selling these bluetooth Sound pOp speakers that are the size of a baseball. I can’t tell you how cool those things are. There are a lot of cool Christmas things you can buy here in Wellington. The key to this “30 days of Christmas” series which will start next Sunday, is it won’t be just about merchants advertising their wares, but educating the people what is available here in Wellington. There is a story to tell. Before walking the streets, I was surprised at all the things I can buy here. It is as if there is a disconnect between merchants and the people living here.Hopefully, the “30 days of Christmas” series starting next week can bridge that gap. 2. 8 things about myself… Being someone who frequents Facebook on occasion, there are always these silly little things to keep you interested. A couple weeks ago if you didn’t answer a riddle correctly you had to put a picture of a giraffe on your profile picture. Marijuana, anyone? This week some Facebook users are being given a number. Say you get an “8”, then you have to write eight things people might not know about you on your status update. That was my number. But instead of wasting such introspection on Facebook, I’d rather bring it over here on the superior website Sumner Newscow.1. I graduated with 16 classmates in an Eastern Colorado school. Therefore I can say I finished in the top 10 of my class.2. I find immaculately clean homes to be suffocating.3. Being the cynical journalist that I am, I decided to become an atheist a few years back. I became so lonely, depressed and in a constant state of panic that I brought God back into my life two days later. I’ve felt fine ever since.4. As I get older I seem to get closer to God, but further away from organized religion.5. I never felt worthy as a person until I married my wife, and then started having children.6. I started this website because after leaving the Wellington Daily News, I was staring at retirement at 47 and not really having served any purpose in life other than picking up a paycheck. I wanted to somehow make a difference.7. I finished reading Bill O’Reilly’s “Killing Jesus” and find Jesus to be the most courageous man that ever stepped on this earth. Even if you don’t believe in his salvation (and I do), you have to recognize his earthly accomplishments.8. I used to view sports strictly in terms of wins and losses. Now I’m more intrigued with how the games are played. 3. Playoff system…Conway Springs lost to Scott City 21-7 in the third round of the playoffs. You have got to love the Cardinals for what they accomplish year in and year out. They make it look so easy. This was one heck of a week for Kansas high school football. Friday night you had arguably the two best Class 5A teams squaring off: Bishop Carroll vs. Salina South and the two best Class 4A teams battling: Andale vs. Holton.I’m not sure Conway Springs vs. Scott City featured the best teams in Class 3A. That probably is reserved for Beloit and Rossville. But it did feature the two state champions of the past two years.Which makes me wonder. Why are these match ups being featured in the state quarterfinals? Shouldn’t these match ups be played in the finals when the two best teams finally meet? The Kansas State High School Activities Association should have a seeded tournament much like the NCAA basketball tournament. That way you have the potential of the two best football teams avoiding one another until the finals. Of course, that doesn’t mean they will. There is always a playoff upset. But it makes for a more climatic tournament. Andale is out of the playoffs in round #3 because it played Holton. The Indians probably deserve better. 5. Shout out of the week…This week’s shout out goes to Arianna Faith Ybarra, the daughter of Tyler Ybarra and Katie Sisson, who is fighting her way to good health after being born last week with a blood circulation disorder (see story here). There will be a benefit dinner in her honor next Saturday. The details are here:center_img Commentary by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Five Cueball thoughts for Nov. 17, 2013…1. The Kennedy assassination…This week marks the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy Assassination. This isn’t a good week for me. I have a lot of other things to do. The last thing I need is to feed my obsession with the Kennedy family and the assassination that is already slightly borderline unhealthy.A few weeks back I came to an epiphany. After decades of being a Kennedy conspiracy nut, I have concluded Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin. I hate that because deep down I don’t want to think that low life little whiney punk was the reason for one of the most tragic and life-changing events in our history. But there are two things that makes me think a conspiracy wasn’t likely.1) People love to talk. If there was such a grand conspiracy someone was bound to say something that would eventually lead to damning evidence that such a conspiracy did take place.2) Oswald himself. His actions after the shooting was bizarre. The guy shoots the president, then goes and shoots a police officer and then runs into a movie theater without paying. Is the guy a nut? Oh, yeah he is. Illogical behavior is usually the result of desperation.Plus, the whole event seems like a steady stream of buffoonery by government authorities from the Secret Service to the Dallas Police. One thing I’ve learned from reporting, is just because someone occupies a position of high importance, it doesn’t mean he/she is smart. Why did the Dallas police parade Oswald around the police station so any Tom, Dick and Harry could come out of nowhere and shoot Oswald. How do you allow someone like Jack Ruby in the building? And really. Why would the President’s men think parading Kennedy and his wife in an open convertible through Dallas – a hot-bed for right-wing Kennedy hating – was such a good idea in the first place? As JFK told his wife that morning. “We are heading into nut country,” after seeing a full page ad in a Dallas newspaper asking for the President to apologize for various things.Nevertheless, I’m still willing to change my mind at any point about the assassination if I hear another good conspiracy story come along. It wouldn’t be any fun otherwise. Close Forgot password? Please put in your email: Send me my password! So many of us are wired to believe that we have to drive to Wichita for everything, that we don’t even take the time to realize what’s available here in town. Many would be surprised by how much of the holiday shopping they might be able to get done in a single afternoon, WITHOUT leaving the City Limits. No, you can’t find everything, but you’ll find much more than you imagine. Small Business Saturday is November 30th. I encourage everyone to take a few minutes and support your local businesses. Everyone benefits when those dollars are spent in Wellington. Report Reply 0 replies · active 351 weeks ago 0 Vote up Vote down WHS Fan · 351 weeks ago I have seen your house I understand #2.
