MONTEBELLO — Host Montebello High School ended a four-game losing streak in dramatic style Friday night, defeating crosstown rival Schurr. After a scoreless first quarter, the Oilers took charge with their running game. Quarterback Rene Cerda completed 11 of 20 pass attempts for 161 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite receiver, Gabriel Diaz, caught seven passes for 110 yards and a score. Becky Miller Schurr kept the game close with special teams play. Nestor Negrette put the Spartans on the scoreboard with a 44-yard field goal, but on Montebello’s next play from scrimmage, Rangel scampered 89 yards for his second of three touchdowns. The Spartans opened the second half with Julian De La Hay’s 85-yard kickoff return.
