DODGERS NOTEBOOK Garciaparra good enough to return

first_imgBy Tony Jackson STAFF WRITER SAN FRANCISCO – Nomar Garciaparra returned to the starting lineup on Friday night after he was able to jog around the bases the day before. Garciaparra said he still experienced discomfort in his strained left calf while running, but the fact he was able to actually do it told him he was ready to play again. He had been available to pinch hit in certain situations for the previous three days, but hadn’t been called upon to do so in any of those games. “I’m going to play smart,” Garciaparra said. “I won’t be taking the extra base or running too much, but I’ll be playing. We’ll see how it feels. I always said when I felt like I could jog, I would be out there. I wasn’t trying to get it to a certain percentage. I knew it wouldn’t be 100 percent or pain-free.” Manager Grady Little danced around the subject of whether Garciaparra would now reclaim his everyday third base job after rookie Andy LaRoche filled in capably since being recalled on Sunday from triple-A Las Vegas. But Little also said he plans to start Garciaparra again in today’s nationally televised game. “We’ll make sure he is healthy,” Little said. “I don’t see him jumping in there and playing every single day.” LaRoche went into Friday night’s game 2-for-13, with both hits doubles, in this, his second major league stint of the season. Garciaparra began the day hitting .404 for the season with runners in scoring position and .280 overall. Coin flips Major League Baseball held a series of coin flips Friday to determine home-field advantage in the event that a one-game playoff is needed to determine a postseason berth. Of the eight possible one-game playoffs involving the Dodgers, only three of them would take place at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers would host San Diego if the clubs had to break a tie for the National League West title, but the Dodgers would have to go to Arizona or Colorado in the event of a tie atop the division with either of those teams. If a playoff is needed to determine the wild card, the Dodgers would host Chicago or Philadelphia, but would travel to either Arizona, Colorado or San Diego. No playoff will be held if two teams that have clinched postseason berths tie for the division title, which is what happened last year with the Dodgers and Padres. In that case, the first tiebreaker is head-to-head results during the season, which is why the Padres were awarded last year’s division title after winning 13 of 18 from the Dodgers. Saito cited Closer Takashi Saito received the DHL Delivery Man of the Month award as baseball’s best closer for August, when he went 10-for-10 in save opportunities, allowed just one earned run in 14 appearances for a 0.68 ERA and struck out 21 batters in 131/3 innings. Saito has 37 saves in his second season in the United States, the sixth-highest single-season total in Dodgers history. White interviews Dodgers assistant general manager Logan White spent the day in Houston being interviewed by Astros officials for the vacant general manager position. It was White’s first interview for such a position. “I thought the process was very professional,” said White, who met with Astros owner Drayton McLane, president Tal Smith and board member Bob McClaren. “They were great as far as being accommodating and forthright. For me, it was a great learning experience.” White was the Dodgers’ amateur scouting director from 2002 until he was promoted last winter and is the man generally credited with stocking the club’s talent-rich farm system. The Astros interviewed close to a dozen candidates this week. White also could become a candidate in Pittsburgh, where GM Dave Littlefield was fired on Friday. White has a close relationship with Pirates manager Jim Tracy, who managed the Dodgers from 2001-05, although Littlefield’s firing could cast Tracy’s future into doubt, as well.
